Wow, I’ve had a busy week and it isn’t Friday yet! Currently, I have been helping my brother-in-law open up his new supplement store. He had known a bit about working out but my phone rang, late Monday night, and I was asked a favor. The owner of this new store was going to need product and had no clue what to get. Putting my mind to the test, I offered to help him out and my brain has been going non-stop. One funny thing that I’ve learned from all of this is how all of the different supplements start to run together. I’ve been putting in more hours at that store, than I have at home, so I had to start dialing it down a little bit. Even when you think that you have seen every single supplement around, you would be surprised, when flipping through catalogs to order from.
There are so many small pieces that go into setting up a business, I had no idea. I had to let the owner handle the number side of things, he has always been smarter with that. I really hope that my brother-in-law’s business venture will go well for him. Another tidbit of knowledge that I learned was how many supplement stores can be in one small area of town. I can’t complain though, I’ve had a great time learning about how a shop really works, behind the scenes. I have added a couple of new gray hairs to my head, of that I am almost positive, but I wouldn’t have traded the experience for the world.
I didn’t realize the sheer amount of inventory that would be needed to fill such a small store area. The guy I know got a good deal on his lease of the storefront space, I just didn’t know how much it would take to fill those lonely walls. Cleaning up the shop wasn’t the most fun and I even had a couple of spider scares but everything looks super clean now. It wasn’t easy to find the right profit margins, when considering how much some of the supplements costs, even on a wholesaler level. I just hope that he has enough clientele to keep his business running well.
There were some bumps in the road that it took to get this store ready to open but we handled them together and got through all of the hassle. I look forward to his shop being around for a long time, namely because I need to get a family discount on those supplements, ha! In all seriousness, it was a great learning experience to see all of the processes that go into a hopping little supplement shop. The next time that you go and pay a visit to your favorite store, take a second to think of how that store came to be, most likely, it was a wild and stressful journey for the owners and staff.
If I don’t flip through another catalog for the next year, it will be too soon but knowing that I handpicked every single product that was going to show up was a great feeling. Being able to make the final order for this business gave me a sense of being proud, knowing that someone would bestow such an important series of decisions on a chump like me. Thank you sir, for putting faith in me and allowing me to help you start, what is sure to be, an awesome endeavor.
